The beautiful Camellia comes in a wide range of varieties, most prefer shade for at least half of the summer day. Varieties such as the Sasanqua Camellia and some Japonica Camellias will take sun exposed positions and still perform provided the summers are not too hot. Summer sun is necessary for ideal growth and flowering. Buildings and walls offer ideal shade, as do shade cloth enclosures. Trees are ideal as long as their roots are not so close as to compete for water and food.
WINTER SUN: Direct morning sun in winter is to be avoided. Flowers and buds covered with dew will be scorched by the early morning sun. Double flowers which have had their outer petals burned in this way may not be able to open. Mid afternoon winter sun is the most advantageous.
What is more rewarding and so easy to look after than a sun loving (sasanqua) Camellia?
These plants do so well in our Australian climate that people sometimes take them for granted. Grown as a specimen plant or a hedge, they make a real landscape statement.
