- Disease from Potting Mixes Also see our technical Information - click here

In all decaying plant material in our garden and in nature one can find microorganisms. One of the most widespread of these is Legionnella longbeachii. All Potting mixes are made using at least some composted material.

All Gardeners use Potting Mix in their gardens. We need to raise with you the precautions to take against this disease. There is circumstantial evidence to link it not only to potting mix but also to many other materials we use in our gardens.

We should take note and take the necessary precautionary measures when using potting mix.

As the disease can be dust borne, be careful when working that the breeze is coming from behind you to blow the dust away.

Smokers are more at risk then non-smokers for two reasons:

  • Because legionella affects the respiratory system, the smoker is more susceptible to the disease anyway.
  • Adult males over 60 who smoke and have chest problems are most at risk.

The disease can also be spread by bio-aerosols, fine particles of moisture too small to see with the naked eye. These can be made for instance when we rip open a bag of mix. Ensure to use scissors and cut along the top seam.

What should we do?

  • Always wash well with soap and water after potting and before eating.
  • Follow the suggestions on the M.S.D.S. sheet, which forms part of this note.
  • Take good duty of care as you go about your Garden tasks.

Most problems to date have been experienced by Males over 60 who smoke and have respiratory problems.

This disease can be fatal, however, it is easily cured if caught early in its development. Always see a Doctor and tell him you have been working in your garden, ask him to check against Legionella longbeachii.
